Mahatma Gandhi was awarded the Man of the Year of 1930. He was also
the second best “Person of the Century” with only the great scientist
Albert Einstein beating him to the top in a survey in the year 1999.
The Indian Government has constituted an award honoring the Mahatma
awarding eminent personalities both national and international across a
variety of fields every year naming it the Gandhi Peace Prize. The
most remarkable foreign personality to have received this award is
Nelson Mandela, the leader of South Africa who fought against apartheid
and for the betterment of the lives of the common people. Gandhiji was
also accredited as being in the league of the 25 most prominent
political leaders across history.
Ironically though, it is a point of deep regret that Gandhiji did never receive the highest grade Nobel Prize in spite of five nominations during 1937 and 1948. Though, he went closer to the finalization only in the years of 1937 and ten years later in 1947, the Nobel committee apologized for missing awarding Gandhiji. Unfortunately, when he was nominated in 1948, he succumbed to the bullet hitting of Godse early the same year, he could not be awarded the Nobel Prize. However, the Nobel committee did not award peace award to any individual because they found nobody living to be eligible enough. There is a strong evidence to believe that the committee did think through the idea of awarding Gandhiji in spite of him being no more and that is precisely why they mentioned that there was no living person who was eligible for the award. The Dalai Lama remarked that the Nobel Peace Award in 1989 awarded to him was actually the tribute that the team wanted to pay to Mahatma Gandhi.
